Color psychology is the study of how various colors affect us. This will vary a little due to the culture in which we were raised, our childhood associations with a particular color, and any negative associations we have had with it as adults. However, many associations remain constant for the vast majority of people.
Creating a mood with colors
Colors evoke certain reactions from most of us, and marketers use it to create packaging as well as to create products. They can also be used in crafting to make the finished product evocative of certain moods:
Red is associated with passion, energy, strength and power, and its effects on the human body are to increase blood pressure, respiration, and garner attention.
Yellow conveys happiness, joy, and energy. It elicits cheerfulness, warmth, and mental activity. Overuse can be disturbing and babies are known to cry more in yellow rooms.
Blue is a soothing color that suggests intelligence, serenity, coolness, and a clear mind. It appears to be the world’s favorite color.
Green is very grounding in that it suggests nature. It brings with it a feeling of harmony, growth, safety, healing, and endurance. Its calming effect is very beneficial, and it implies sincerity, stability, wisdom, faith and truth.
Orange has both the energy of red and the happy feelings of yellow, and is associated with joy, enthusiasm, success, creativity, determination, and stimulation. Too much orange can be overstimulating.
Purple or violet evoke a feeling of spiritual awareness, luxury, nobility, dignity, independence, and creativity. Violet is the shortest wavelength, and it combines the energy of red and the soothing stability of blue. Overusing purple can lead to too much introversion and introspection.
White tames the strength of any of these colors when it is used with them. Enjoy creating moods with your crafting!
